Fake UPI payment screenshot? Check your account, not their screen

A customer holds up their phone. Green tick, your name, ₹850, "Payment successful". The queue is building. Is it real, or a fake UPI payment screenshot?

Don't look at their screen. Look at your own account. If the money is in your UPI app or bank app, you've been paid. If it isn't there, you haven't. Everything else on this page is detail.

Why reading the image doesn't work

The usual advice is to check the font, the timestamp, the alignment and the transaction ID. That made sense when fakes were made by hand in a photo editor.

It doesn't work now. Spoof apps generate a "payment successful" screen in the style of every major UPI app, with your name and any amount typed in. Across a counter, in four seconds, it looks right in every detail you could check.

An image proves nothing about whether money moved. It only proves that someone's phone can display an image. That's also why no "fake payment screenshot checker" can settle it: the only reliable checker is your own account.

The check that works

Open your UPI app or your bank's app and look for the credit. Five seconds, and it can't be faked, because the only thing you trust is your own account.

Ways to make that check faster:

Your UPI app's history. Pull down to refresh. Incoming payments show the payer's name and the amount.

A sound box, if you take enough payments to justify one. It reads each payment out loud, so you don't need to look at a screen. Sound boxes usually come with a merchant QR from a bank or payment app.

Bank SMS alerts, as a second source. Keep them on, but don't treat an SMS alone as proof.

Bank SMS can be faked too

Scammers send messages made to look like bank credit alerts, with your name, an amount and a convincing reference number.

Genuine bank alerts come from a registered sender name that ends in a hyphen and a letter, such as HDFCBK-S or HDFCBK-T. The letter shows the type of message: -S for service messages such as account alerts, -T for transactional ones such as OTPs, -P for promotions and -G for government. A "credit" message from an ordinary ten-digit mobile number is fake.

Even a correct-looking sender isn't proof. Your balance and your app's transaction history are the proof. The SMS is a convenience.

What a real payment record has

When you open the payment in your own app, a genuine credit shows:

DetailWhat it looks like
AmountExactly what you charged
Payer's name or UPI IDThe person standing in front of you
Date and timeWithin the last minute or two
UPI reference number12 digits, also called the UTR or RRN
StatusSuccessful or completed, not pending

If a customer later says "I paid you", ask for the UPI reference number from their app and look for that exact number in your history. A matching number settles it either way.

The six tricks you'll actually see

1. The spoof app. A perfect "payment successful" screen that was never a payment. Beaten by checking your own account.

2. "I'll pay to your number." The buyer avoids your QR, asks for your mobile number, then shows a fake receipt and sends a ready-made "payment done" message. In 2021, Delhi police arrested a man who used exactly this method with a spoof app; police said he admitted to cheating more than 200 shopkeepers. Beaten by checking your own account, and by asking people to scan your QR.

3. The old screenshot. A real payment, made to you or someone else last week, shown again today. Beaten by checking the time on your own record.

4. The edited amount. ₹50 sent, ₹850 shown. Beaten by checking the amount on your own record, and by saying it out loud before they pay: "Eight-fifty, yes?"

5. "It's pending." Sometimes true, often not. See below.

6. The wrong-transfer call. A fake credit SMS, then a call: "I sent you ₹5,000 by mistake, please send it back." Check your actual balance. If no money arrived, there's nothing to return. If money really did arrive by mistake, ask them to raise it with their own bank, which takes it up with yours. Never send money to a number that called you.

"But it says pending"

Pending is not paid. A normal UPI payment completes in seconds. One that shows pending hasn't completed, and until it does, the money isn't in your account. It may still go through, or it may fail and go back to the payer.

Apps can't keep re-checking, either. Since 1 August 2025, NPCI's rules allow an app to check a stuck payment's status only three times, at least 90 seconds apart. So a pending payment can sit for a few minutes before anyone knows.

Pending is also the scammer's favourite word, because it buys an excuse to leave with the goods. Treat it exactly like "not paid".

When it's slow for real

Sometimes a genuine payment takes a minute or two: a busy bank server, a weak network. Most of the time the customer isn't lying.

Handle it without accusing anyone:

"It hasn't come through on my side yet. Give it a minute; it usually lands. Or send it again on this QR, and if both go through I'll return one."

Calm, specific, no suggestion that they're a thief. If it was genuine, it arrives. If it wasn't, this is when people remember somewhere else to be.

Online orders and deliveries

Screenshots sent on WhatsApp are where most sellers get caught, because no customer is standing in front of you and the only hurry is the one the buyer invents.

Never dispatch on a screenshot. Check the credit in your own app before anything leaves.

Match the reference number if the buyer sends one.

Be wary of urgency. "My driver is waiting", "I need it in ten minutes", or anger when you say you're checking are pressure tactics, not proof.

For new buyers, take payment before you pack, or use cash on delivery through someone you trust.

Set up your shop to check in seconds

Keep payment notifications on in your UPI app, with the volume up during business hours.

Put the QR where you can see your own phone. If checking means turning your back on the counter, you'll stop checking by the third customer.

Give staff their own way to check, such as a sound box or a second phone with notifications, so they don't need yours.

Use the note field. A QR carrying "Sharma Kirana" in the note makes your history easy to read at the end of the day.

If you've been cheated

Stop contact with the person, and don't send them anything to "fix" it.

Save everything: the fake screenshot, the chat, the phone number, their UPI ID if you have it, and the time.

Report it straight away on 1930, the national cyber crime helpline (24 hours), or at cybercrime.gov.in, and keep the complaint reference number. Reporting fast gives the best chance of money being held before it moves on.

Tell your bank the same day, with the evidence. For a large amount, also file an FIR at your local police station.

Report the fake SMS, call or WhatsApp message on Chakshu, the Department of Telecommunications' reporting facility on sancharsaathi.gov.in. Chakshu is for suspicious messages and calls; money you've lost goes to 1930.

Warn other sellers in your market or WhatsApp group. These scams usually move from shop to shop.

If you shared your UPI PIN, or let anyone see you type it, change your PIN straight away.

Questions

How do I check if a UPI payment is real?

Open your own UPI app or bank app and look for the credit. Never judge from the customer's screenshot; spoof apps produce those in seconds.

Can a UPI payment screenshot be faked?

Yes, easily and convincingly. Examining the image is not a defence.

Is there an app that detects fake payment screenshots?

No app can prove a payment from a picture. The proof is the credit in your own account, which no screenshot can fake.

Can a bank SMS be fake?

Yes. Genuine alerts come from a short bank sender name, not a ten-digit number, and even then your balance is the real proof.

What if the customer says the payment is pending?

Treat it as unpaid. A real UPI payment normally completes in seconds. Ask them to retry, or hold the goods until it lands.

Someone paid and it's not showing in my app. What now?

Give it a couple of minutes and refresh, then check your statement. If money left their account but never reached yours, the payment fails and goes back to them. RBI's rules require that reversal by the day after the payment (T+1) for a transfer to a person, or within five days (T+5) for a payment to a merchant, with ₹100 a day in compensation if the bank is late. Chasing the reversal is for their bank.

What is a UTR or UPI reference number?

The unique 12-digit number every UPI payment gets. It appears in both the payer's and the receiver's history, so a matching number proves a payment.

Fake GPay screenshot kaise pehchane?

Screenshot dekhkar pehchanna ab mushkil hai, kyunki app se bane fake screenshots bilkul asli jaise dikhte hain. Isliye unka phone mat dekhiye, apna dekhiye. Apni UPI app ya bank app kholiye aur payment history check kijiye. Paisa aaya hai to wahan dikhega; nahi dikha, to nahi aaya. SMS par bhi poora bharosa mat kijiye, wo bhi nakli ho sakta hai.

Fake payment scam mein paisa wapas kaise milega?

Turant 1930 par call kijiye ya cybercrime.gov.in par complaint kijiye, aur apne bank ko bataiye. Jitni jaldi report karenge, paisa rokne ka chance utna zyada hota hai. Screenshot, chat aur number sambhal kar rakhiye.

Should I buy a sound box?

If you take more than a few UPI payments an hour, it pays for itself in attention. Below that, app notifications do the same job for free.
