Collect money from a group

One person always ends up collecting. They post a UPI ID in the group, then spend a week asking who has paid and matching a dozen identical credits to names.

₹

Each member's payment note becomes "Maint Nov - their name", so you can match it in your bank statement.

Add ", 3200" after a name for a different amount. 0 members.

ezyupi only created this link. The money goes from your UPI app straight to the payee's bank account.

Paid chips are updated by the organiser by hand, after checking their bank.

Set it up here instead: one page with everyone's name and amount. Share the link in the group; each person taps their own name and pays you from their UPI app, with their name in the payment note. You tick them off as the money lands, and everyone can see the list fill up.

How it works

Name the collection and set the amount: the same for everyone, or a different amount per person. Add a due date if there is one.

Add the people: up to 300 names.

Share one link in the WhatsApp group. Each person opens it, taps their name, and sees their amount, your QR and your UPI ID, with a note like "Meera gift - Arun".

Tick people off. When a payment shows up in your bank app, open your private edit link and mark that person paid. Keep the edit link safe; a collection nobody opens for 12 months is deleted automatically. The page shows how many have paid, and marks the collection "Overdue" after the due date and "All paid" when everyone's in.

ezyupi never sees the payments, because the money goes straight from each person's UPI app to your bank. The paid stamps are yours to set, after checking your own account.

How people pay

  • Pay to your UPI ID, shown at the bottom of the page, from their UPI app's send-money option. This works for any amount within their normal limit.
  • Scan your QR from another phone or screen.
  • Tap Pay. Since April 2024, UPI apps block link payments to personal UPI IDs, so this may say "This transaction may be risky"; if it does, they pay to your UPI ID instead.

When someone pays by typing your UPI ID, ask them to write their name in the note, so you can match it.

Deciding the amounts

Equal shares for a gift or a trip fund: total cost divided by the number of people, rounded up so the pot doesn't come up short.

By category for a society: one amount per flat type, such as ₹1,500 for a 2BHK and ₹2,000 for a 3BHK.

Voluntary, for a chanda or a donation where people choose: use a pay page with a few suggested amounts, or a plain QR, since a group collection needs an amount for each person.

Leave a small buffer. Collections always cost a little more than planned. Asking for ₹550 a head and returning the surplus is easier than asking everyone for another ₹50 later.

Messages you can copy

Starting the collection

"Hi all! We're collecting ₹500 each for Meera's farewell gift by Friday. Open the link, tap your name and pay. If the Pay button doesn't work, pay to my UPI ID on the page and write your name in the note. Thanks!"

A gentle reminder to the few who haven't paid

"Hi Arun, just a nudge for Meera's gift, ₹500. Same link as before. We're ordering on Friday."

Closing the collection

"Thanks everyone, we've got it all! The gift cost ₹6,750 against ₹7,000 collected. I'll return the extra ₹250, or we can put it towards the cake. Let me know."

Your edit page has a ready "Remind pending members" message listing who hasn't paid, to post in the group. For a softer nudge, message people one to one; nobody enjoys being named in front of everyone.

Keep it transparent

When you're holding other people's money, a short summary at the end stops questions before they start: how much came in, what it was spent on, and what's left. Share it in the group with a photo of the receipt if there is one.

If the plan changes

If the trip is cancelled or the gift costs less, return the money to each person by UPI with a clear note, such as "Refund Goa trip", to the same people in the same amounts, so everyone's records line up.

Where people use it

Office gift for a birthday, a farewell or a wedding.

Society function for Diwali, Ganpati or a sports day, with an amount per flat.

Trip fund, where everyone pays in before you book.

Class or batch event, like a reunion or a farewell.

Condolence or medical collection, where the last thing anyone wants is to chase people.

A note on collecting for others

If you're holding money that isn't yours, such as a society fund, a community collection, or money for someone in difficulty, collect it into an account that belongs to the group rather than your personal savings account.

It keeps your own records clean, makes the collection easy to account for, and avoids awkward questions later about why a large sum passed through your account. For a registered society or trust, use the organisation's own account.

Keeping business and personal money apart

Splitting instead

If one person already paid and the others owe them a share, that's the other way round.

Questions

How do I collect money from a group on UPI?

Make a collection with everyone's name and amount, share the link in the group, and mark people paid as their payments arrive in your bank app.

Does everyone need the same app?

No. Any UPI app can pay your QR or your UPI ID.

Can ezyupi tell me who has paid?

No, because the money never passes through us. Payments made from the page carry the person's name in the note, and you mark them paid on the list after checking your bank.

Can amounts differ per person?

Yes. Set an amount for each person, or one amount for everyone.

How many people can I add?

Up to 300.

What if I collect too much?

Return the surplus to each person by UPI with a note, or agree with the group what to spend it on.

What's the difference between this and the bill splitter?

The splitter is for sharing a bill one person already paid. Group collection is for gathering money towards something.

Group se paise kaise collect kare?

Collection ka naam, har vyakti ka naam aur amount daaliye, aur ek link WhatsApp group mein bhej dijiye. Har vyakti apne naam par tap karke aapko UPI se payment karega. Bank app mein paisa dikhte hi edit link se us vyakti ko "paid" mark kar dijiye.
